  Santorini

The next port of call is Santorini. Santorini, also known as Thera or Thira is a volcanic island about 120 miles (200 km) southeast from Greece's mainland. It's a beautiful island and a nice cruise destination.
Page introduction photo
Because there's no port where the cruise ship can dock, the ship anchors in the lagoon and the guests are brought to shore with tender boats.
Tendering continues throughout the day so you can leave the ship and come back whenever you like.
From the tender boat you get a nice view of the ship.
On our way to the port of Fira, where you can take the steep cable car or the Z-shaped footpath up to the main part of Fira.
We decide to take the cable car up (and later on the footpath down).
There we are, about 1300 ft (400 m) above sea level, in Fira. You've got a terrific view up here.
There's the Rotterdam, in the middle of the lagoon what used to be the crater of a volcano. A disastrous volcanic eruption destroyed most of Santorini in 1640 BC and formed the large ridge where we are standing on and on which Fira was built.
Another view on Fira. If you look closely, you can see the Z-shaped footpath which leads down to the small port.
While wandering around, every now and then we get a nice view on the Rotterdam.
A typical photo of Santorini: a small church painted all in pastel colors.
Here I am, one of the few pictures where you can see the creator of this website. My wife and I are having a drink in a typical Santorini restaurant, while enjoying the view.
The narrow streets are filled with souvenir shops, jewelry shops, cafes and restaurants and can be very crowded with tourists during the summer season. Right now (end of april) it's not crowded at all.
You can choose to walk down the Z-shaped footpath or take a ride on the donkey. You almost have no choice, because it's not very busy with tourists and many donkey owners try to convince you to take the donkey to make some money.
Back on the ship. In the late afternoon the ship leaves for Kusadasi and sails slowly so everyone can enjoy the view on Santorini.
The white houses on the cliff look like snow on the mountains. Very beautiful.
If you ever visit Santorini other than by cruise ship, make sure to make some kind of boat trip, to see the real beauty of Santorini, which can only be seen from the water.
On our way to Kusadasi, Turkey. Let's change, have some dinner, go to the theater, gamble in the casino, dance in the night club or just relax and have a drink in one of the bars on the ship.
